The Big Cover-Up
… whatever is true … honorable … just … pure … lovely … commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me – practice these things … Philippians 4:8-9
As a young girl I had a fascination with fashion. (That may have started way back in the Garden of Eden.) While some of my friends doodled or were drawing cartoon characters, I was making countless pictures of sketches of shoes, glamorous shoes—the very kind of foot-killers being worn today with five or six inch heels, straps or bows and glitz of all kinds. As I got older, although it was way beyond my level of sophistication or ability to re-create, Vogue Magazine fed my appetite for high fashion. So when I got a mailing this week about the publication Teen Vogue, I was curious as to what was being featured for teens in this day and age. And I was horrified.
While their Mission Statement reads: “Teen Vogue is the young person’s guide to saving the world! We aim to educate, enlighten, and empower our audience to create a more inclusive environment by amplifying the voices of the unheard, telling stories that normally go untold, and providing resources for teens.” It was very deceptive. WARNING!
It all sounded harmless enough until I read about some of the featured articles. Among colorful ads for lipstick and trendy shoes were an abhorrent, totally shocking range of sexually-charged articles such as “Guide to Anal Sex”; “Young People Tell You About Their Abortions;” “Consent Can Totally Be Sexy;” “What It’s Like to Have Sex After Being Sexually Assaulted.”
And, worse, this is an ONLINE magazine; there’s no need to subscribe … or pay to read this smut. It’s all free; they can download it onto their smartphones or tablets.
Are these topics we want to be “empowering” our daughters or granddaughters? Malachi issued this promise and warning to God’s people that “He (God) will turn the hearts of fathers (and mothers) to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers (and mothers) to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.” (4:6, my edits)
Our young women are being robbed; God wants so much more for them as women than that sleazy rendition. OUR PRAYER is that mothers (and grandmothers) will be very intentional about protecting their precious young girls from this kind of immoral filth by empowering them with the truth of scripture. Our new 8-week abridged version of The Cry of the Hidden Heart is designed to do just that: give them a picture of the beauty of God’s design for them as females created in His image, and for marriage and sexuality. How about sharing it with the young women in your family and their friends?
They (the older women) are to teach what good, and so to train the young women … Titus 2:3-4a
